Northamptonshire’s robotic grocery delivery service is expanding

In Northamptonshire, more grocery delivery robots will soon hit the streets. The autonomous vehicles are now in use in stores in Northampton, Milton Keynes, and Cambourne, Cambridgeshire, thanks to a collaboration with Starship Technologies.

Wellingborough, Rushden, and Higham Ferrers will now be able to use the service, according to North Northamptonshire Council.

Graham Lawman, a councilman from the Conservative party, called it “very exciting.”In order to provide the service to 45,000 residents over 33,000 households in the three first areas, the Tory-run council has partnered with four Co-op stores.

They were “quite cute delivery robots,” according to Mr Lawman.

In order to help provide a clean and green alternative to the private car for daily convenience shopping and help cut emissions, he stated, “We are supporting this new service as another innovation.”  The reaction to the delivery robot image stuns the man. According to the company that developed the robots, on average, a delivery trip required energy comparable to that required to heat a cup of water in a kettle.

The robots were small and light, and their top speed was limited to 6 km/h (4 mph) human walking speed.
